DEPARTMENT OF DRAVYAGUNA VIGYAN (PHARMACOLOGY)
This Department deals with Medicinal plants of Ayurvedic Classics, their identification, properties, action and therapeutic uses in accordance with fundamental Principles of Ayurveda. The subject also includes standardization of Medicinal plants. Amongst all the available sources of drugs in various therapies herbal drugs are proved to be safest; so more and more people are attracted and wish to undergo only herbal therapy.
The department conducts UG as well as PG courses and is committed to produce graduates and post graduates with all-round professional skills. Students are taken for regular herbal garden visits and tours, with more emphasis on practical training of plant identification techniques. The departmental herbal garden houses around 270 species of medicinal plants including essential oil plants like lavender, and rare ones like Kutki (Saussurea lappa), Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi) and Pashanabhed (Bergenia ligulata).The family-wise allocation of plants and QR coding of the species makes learning ‘on the site’ easier and more effective. The department holds a huge collection of herbarium sheets of medicinal plants belonging to 66 families. The departmental museum has around 250 raw drugs and 70 fresh specimens, so as to familiarize the scholars with authentic sources of medicinal plants and rule out the adulterants available in the market. For providing hands-on-training, the state-of-the-art ‘Pharmacognosy lab’ has also been set up in the department.

Indian astrological tradition distinguishes 9 species of plants representing nine planets in the celestial system (Navagrahas).

Planting and worshiping the respective trees are believed to bestow health and prosperity. Many of the herbs which are recommended for auspicious ceremonies are invariably bound to our culture and tradition. Their sheer presence can influence the human /psyche and emanate positivity.
